This morning, I want to talk about something I believe could shake the financial markets to their core—President Trump's escalating attempts to replace Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. While I’m generally a supporter of the unitary executive theory, which gives the president broad powers, this is one place where I draw the line. History shows us exactly what happens when the Fed loses its independence—and none of it is good. We’re already seeing signs of market jitters. A simple leaked conversation where Trump floated the idea of firing Powell caused the U.S. dollar to drop 1.2% in minutes. Think about that—your dollar lost value in real time. Mortgage rates, treasury yields, and the S&P all reacted. It’s not just theory. This stuff matters, and it hits your wallet directly. Back in the '70s, Nixon pressured Fed Chair Arthur Burns and the result was a historic inflation crisis that took Paul Volcker years to fix. We cannot afford to make that mistake again. If we start treating the Fed Chair like a cabinet appointment, it opens the door for any future president—on the left or right—to hijack monetary policy. That’s a dangerous game to play with your savings, your mortgage, and the value of the U.S. dollar. So before we all nod our heads at the idea of swapping out Powell for someone more “friendly,” we really need to pause and ask: what does that do to American credibility, stability, and the long-term health of the economy?
