Hedge funds are dumping stocks at record levels, and it’s not hard to see why. The economic undercurrents are signaling caution, and I’m here to break it all down for you. The stock market is now worth $63.8 trillion, near its all-time high, but warning signs are everywhere. The S&P 500’s price-to-book ratio has exceeded levels seen before the dot-com crash, and 10-year Treasury yields have hit 4.7%, pushing mortgage rates toward 8%. Homebuyers are paying nearly double in interest compared to just two years ago, and existing home sales have slumped to their lowest levels since 1995. Meanwhile, credit card delinquency rates are spiking, consumer debt is plunging, and corporate bankruptcies are climbing to levels not seen since the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis. At Behind the Markets, we’ve been trimming our portfolios, preparing for what could be a rough ride ahead. But we’re not panicking—we’re staying disciplined and focused. The Fed is signaling concern about inflation being stickier than expected. Wall Street initially bet on four rate cuts this year, but now it looks like we may only see two—if any. More importantly, the bond market is increasingly ignoring the Fed. Long-term yields, like the 10-, 20-, and 30-year bonds, are rising independently of rate cuts, driven by a combination of factors tied to fiscal policy and economic shifts. The incoming Trump administration’s proposed policies are raising alarms at the Fed. Massive spending, potential changes to immigration policy, and renewed tariffs on imports could create a cocktail of inflationary pressures. For example, deportation of undocumented workers could strain industries like construction and agriculture, driving up wages and costs. Tariffs could raise prices on everyday goods, reducing purchasing power. These inflationary risks are already reflected in higher bond yields, and the Fed appears to be shifting from an easing stance to a neutral one. As investors, it’s crucial to stay focused on these macroeconomic developments. Rising yields are putting pressure on the housing and mortgage sectors, and this trend is just beginning to ripple through the economy.
