Copper Still Offers Substantial Upside Opportunity for These Stocks

Copper demand is only expected to accelerate — and the story unfolding around the red metal is nothing short of remarkable.

In fact, according to BHP, global copper demand will increase about 70% between 2021 and 2050, driven by three unstoppable trends: the world’s urgent infrastructure buildout, power grid modernization, and the rise of data centers that support artificial intelligence. Each of these growth engines is a long-term structural tailwind, not a short-lived cycle.

Think of it this way: as economies transition toward cleaner energy and smarter technologies, copper sits at the center of it all. It’s an essential component in everything from EV batteries and charging stations to transmission lines, solar panels, and the high-speed cabling that powers the world’s data infrastructure.

In fact, as noted by the Financial Times, “The world’s largest miners have been rushing to increase their exposure to high-growth copper assets as increased demand is expected to create a shortage.” That statement alone captures the growing sense of urgency across the mining sector. Many producers that once focused heavily on iron ore, coal, or gold are now redirecting capital to copper projects — because they see what’s coming.

    Freeport-McMoRan (SYM: FCX)

Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) remains one of the best pure plays on copper strength.

After bottoming out near $28 in April, the stock has rebounded to roughly $41.30 — a gain of nearly 50% from its lows. With copper demand expected to far exceed supply for years to come, there’s plenty of room for FCX to climb higher.

Recent earnings reinforce that momentum. The company reported earnings per share (EPS) of 50 cents, beating estimates by six cents. Revenue came in at $6.97 billion, up 2.7% year over year, and topping expectations by $240 million.

In addition, HSBC recently upgraded Freeport-McMoRan to a “Buy” rating with a price target of $50 per share, citing higher metals price assumptions and improving market conditions. According to the firm, as noted by CNBC, the “rating change and increase in the company’s estimates over the next two years were due to higher metals price assumptions. These higher prices have stemmed from recent market volatility and significant supply disruptions, especially in the case of platinum and copper.”

Freeport’s portfolio is also well-diversified across copper, gold, and molybdenum assets — giving it exposure to multiple commodity uptrends while keeping it relatively resilient against volatility in any single market. Its mines span the U.S., Indonesia, and South America, giving it both scale and strategic geographic reach.

In short, Freeport is not just a copper miner — it’s a bellwether for the entire sector. As copper prices rise, FCX tends to amplify those moves, making it an ideal vehicle for investors seeking leveraged exposure to the metal’s upside.

Global X Copper Miners ETF (SYM: COPX)

For investors looking for diversification instead of individual stock risk, the Global X Copper Miners ETF (COPX)offers a smart, efficient way to ride the copper wave.

With an expense ratio of 0.65%, the ETF gives exposure to about 40 copper-related holdings, including top producers such as Lundin Mining, Glencore, Southern Copper, BHP Group, Freeport-McMoRan, Ero Copper, and Taseko Mines — among others.

That means instead of betting on one miner’s operational success or failure, investors can gain broad access to the entire copper supply chain. This includes exploration, development, and production companies across multiple continents.

COPX has also benefited from renewed interest in commodities and metals as inflation hedges. With copper prices trending higher, the ETF has seen rising inflows and improving performance. For many investors, COPX represents a “set it and forget it” way to participate in copper’s long-term growth story.

Investors must adopt AI or risk being left behind.

Why? It’s mind-boggling how fast the technology is developing.

OpenAI recently said its deep learning systems are improving so fast that it has set a goal of developing a “legitimate AI researcher” by 2028.

The AI would be a “system capable of autonomously delivering on larger research projects,” said Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI’s chief scientist.

He also believes that superintelligence is “less than a decade away.”

“We believe that it is possible that deep learning systems are less than a decade away from superintelligence,” Pachocki added.

Sure enough, the computing needed to train a leading model is now 10 billion times higher than it was in 2010.
