Investors May Want to Short Gold – Here’s How.

    Gold is slipping.

And if President Trump’s top choice – Kevin Warsh – gold could fall even more. That’s because of his reputation as a more hawkish policy-maker compared to other candidates, which has strengthened the US dollar and made assets like gold less attractive.

Granted, Warsh suggested support for lower rates, investors historically view him as a hawk who is less supportive of deep, immediate interest-rate cuts than other candidates. A tighter monetary policy generally strengthens the dollar, which is inverse to gold prices. In addition, speculation of a Warsh Fed boosted the US dollar index by as much as 0.5%, making gold more expensive for foreign buyers and reducing demand.

That being said, investors may want to invest in the short side of gold.

One way to do that is by jumping into inverse gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs), such as:

Direxion Daily Gold Miners Index Bear 2x Shares ETF (SYM: DUST).

With an expense ratio of 0.93%, the Direxion Daily Gold Miners Index Bear 2x Shares ETF seeks to return 200% of the inverse of the performance of the NYSE ARCA Gold Miners Index. Plus, it also pays a quarterly dividend.

Granted, DUST has been in a solid downtrend but that’s because gold has been in a solid uptrend. Now with a potential pullback in the price of gold, we expect for DUST to briefly run.

Direxion Daily Junior Gold Miners Index Bear 2x Shares ETF (SYM: JDST)

With an expense ratio of 0.89%, the Direxion Daily Junior Gold Miners Index Bear 2x Shares ETF seeks to return 200% of the inverse of the performance of the MVIS Global Junior Gold Miners Index. JDST has also been in a solid downtrend but that’s because gold has been in a solid uptrend. Now with a potential pullback in the price of gold, we expect for JDST to briefly run.

ProShares UltraShort Gold ETF (SYM: GLL)

We can also look at the ProShares UltraShort Gold ETF.

With an expense ratio of 0.95%, the ETF seeks to return 200% of the inverse of the performance of the Bloomberg Gold Subindex. It has also been in a solid downtrend because of gold’s solid uptrend. However, much like JDST and DUST, we do expect foresee a near-term rally higher.
