Five stocks stand out heading into Thursday, October 8, 2026, each carrying a bullish rating change issued on Wednesday, October 7. Bond yields pushed higher again. The 10-year Treasury yield rose to 5.34% on October 7, up from 5.31% on October 6. Even so, traders see little chance of another Federal Reserve rate hike at the October 27-28 meeting. Polymarket assigned an 82.5% probability to no change as of October 7. Minutes from the September 15-16 Fed meeting were scheduled for release at 2:00 p.m. Eastern on October 7, giving investors more detail on how policymakers view further tightening.
The five ideas below span data-center chips, property and casualty insurance, surgical robotics, freight trucking, and data storage. Editorial notes only, not investment advice.
Marvell Technology (MRVL) – TD Cowen Upgrades the AI Chip Supplier
Marvell was upgraded from Hold to Buy on Wednesday by TD Cowen. Marvell designs custom AI chips for large cloud companies, along with the optical and networking chips that link data-center servers. Several other firms raised targets on October 7, including JPMorgan's Harlan Sur to $360, Wells Fargo's Joe Quatrochi to $365, and Wolfe Research's Chris Caso to $375. In our view, custom silicon demand from cloud customers is driving a new growth phase.
Shares traded near $280.52 during Wednesday's session, down about 2.26%, giving Marvell a market capitalization near $246 billion. The stock has nearly quadrupled from its 52-week low of $70.69 and sits below its high of $329.88. The trailing price-to-earnings multiple is 93.01.
Consensus reads strong buy, with 24 bullish and two neutral ratings among 26 tracked firms. The average price target of $338.19 implies roughly 21% upside.
Risks: After a steep run, expectations are high. Marvell relies on a few large customers for its custom chip revenue, and any shift in their spending plans could hurt results. Competition from Broadcom and export restrictions also remain factors to monitor.
Allstate (ALL) – HSBC Upgrades in a Contrarian Call
Allstate was upgraded from Hold to Buy on Wednesday by HSBC. Allstate is one of the largest U.S. auto and home insurers. In our view, the company's rate increases over the past two years have restored profitability, and the stock trades at a low multiple of trailing earnings.
Shares traded near $224.17 during Wednesday's session, roughly flat, giving Allstate a market capitalization near $58 billion. The 52-week range runs from $188.08 to $277.22, the trailing price-to-earnings multiple is 4.48, and the dividend yield is near 2%.
This is a contrarian call. Consensus reads hold, with seven bullish, seven neutral, and four bearish ratings among 18 tracked firms. The average price target of $262 implies roughly 17% upside.
Risks: Bears have been active recently. Citigroup's Matthew Heimermann cut his target to $215 on October 2 while holding Sell, Barclays' Alex Scott cut to $221 on October 7 while holding Underweight, and Morgan Stanley's Bob Huang cut to $240 on October 6. Catastrophe losses, slowing premium growth, and auto repair costs all remain factors to monitor.
Intuitive Surgical (ISRG) – Barclays Initiates at Overweight
Intuitive Surgical drew a fresh Overweight initiation on Wednesday from Barclays, part of a broad medical-technology launch that also covered Stryker, Edwards Lifesciences, DexCom, and GE HealthCare. Intuitive makes the da Vinci surgical robot. In our view, its large installed base and recurring revenue from instruments and service give it a durable advantage.
Shares traded near $415.75 during Wednesday's session, up about 2.72%, giving Intuitive a market capitalization near $147 billion. The 52-week range runs from $328.57 to $603.88, and the trailing price-to-earnings multiple is 47.25.
Consensus reads strong buy, with 19 bullish and two neutral ratings among 21 tracked firms. The average price target of $518.71 implies roughly 25% upside.
Risks: Many bulls have cut targets during 2026, including Raymond James' Jayson Bedford, who lowered his to $483 from $577 on July 17. Evercore ISI's Vijay Kumar held In-Line at $480 in April. Hospital capital budgets, competition from new surgical robots, and tariffs on imported parts all remain factors to monitor.
XPO (XPO) – Citi Upgrades the Freight Carrier
XPO was upgraded from Neutral to Buy on Wednesday by Citi analyst Ariel Rosa, who raised his price target to $224 from $220. XPO is one of the largest less-than-truckload carriers in North America, moving shipments too small to fill a full trailer. In our view, its network upgrades and pricing discipline position it well for an eventual freight recovery.
Shares traded near $182.44 during Wednesday's session, down about 0.57%, giving XPO a market capitalization near $21 billion. The 52-week range runs from $121.48 to $232.05, and the trailing price-to-earnings multiple is 53.68.
Consensus reads strong buy, with 16 bullish, one neutral, and one bearish rating among 18 tracked firms. The average price target of $229.94 implies roughly 26% upside, while the Citi target implies about 23%.
Risks: Targets are drifting lower even among bulls. Truist's Lucas Servera cut his target to $220 from $240 on October 7, and JPMorgan's Brian Ossenbeck cut to $205 on October 5. Weak industrial demand, a slowing job market, and labor costs all remain factors to monitor.
NetApp (NTAP) – Evercore ISI Lifts Its Target to the Panel High
NetApp was upgraded from In Line to Outperform on Wednesday by Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani, who raised his price target to $300 from $210. That new target is the high end of the panel. NetApp sells data storage systems and cloud data-management software. In our view, AI projects need large volumes of well-organized data, which is lifting demand for its all-flash storage.
Shares traded near $237.97 during Wednesday's session, up about 4.17%, giving NetApp a market capitalization near $47 billion. The stock sits at its 52-week high of $238.12, well above its low of $93.69. The trailing price-to-earnings multiple is 33.47, and the dividend yield is near 1%.
Consensus reads buy, with six bullish and eight neutral ratings among 14 tracked firms. The average price target of $206.64 sits below the current price, while the Evercore target implies roughly 26% upside. TD Cowen's Krish Sankar raised his target to $250 on October 6.
Risks: The stock has run well ahead of most targets. Wedbush's Matt Bryson held Neutral at $150 in May. Memory chip costs, competition from Pure Storage and Dell, and the pace of enterprise IT spending all remain factors to monitor.
