The Weight Loss Revolution Is Here - 10/17

Investors Expect These Obesity Stocks to Rocket

The weight-loss drug market is exploding — and investors are racing to keep up.

Over the last year, obesity treatments have gone from a niche medical segment to one of the hottest investment opportunities in the market. Drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro have dominated headlines, helping patients lose significant amounts of body weight and driving billions in sales for pharmaceutical giants Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly.

And while these stocks have already run higher, analysts believe we’re still in the early innings of a massive, multi-decade opportunity. According to Goldman Sachs, the global obesity drug market could surpass $100 billion annually by 2030, up from roughly $6 billion today.

That kind of growth potential is impossible for Wall Street to ignore. As new data from key clinical trials roll in and more companies join the race, investors are searching for the next breakout player.

Here are a few of the leading obesity-focused stocks (and one ETF) that could deliver major upside as the market continues to expand.

    Company: Eli Lilly (SYM: LLY)

It’s no surprise that Eli Lilly remains at the center of the obesity drug conversation.

The company’s blockbuster treatment, Mounjaro, has already transformed the diabetes market and shown powerful weight-loss benefits as well. Building on that momentum, Lilly recently reported results for its experimental weight-loss pill, which helped patients lose about 11% of their body weight in clinical trials.

While that landed at the lower end of Wall Street’s lofty expectations, the data still represent a major step forward in the company’s quest to dominate the obesity treatment space. Even more importantly, Lilly later released additional trial results showing that its drug also helped patients with type 2 diabetes lower their blood sugar levels — an encouraging sign for regulatory approval.

Now, the company has the data it needs to pursue FDA approval, which could lead to an official product launch within the next year.

That said, there’s no denying that Lilly’s stock carries a hefty price tag — currently trading around $828 per share. It’s one of the market’s most expensive large-cap names, and some investors may find that entry point intimidating.

But with Lilly’s unmatched position in the obesity space and a strong pipeline of next-generation treatments, the company could continue to deliver long-term growth as the market expands.

    Company: Viking Therapeutics (SYM: VKTX)

For investors looking for a more affordable way to play the obesity megatrend, Viking Therapeutics might be one of the best small-cap opportunities available.

Viking is developing its own dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist known as VK2735, which comes in both injectable and oral formulations. The goal is to compete directly with drugs like Mounjaro and Wegovy — but with a more favorable safety and side effect profile.

So far, the results have been impressive.

In the company’s Phase 2 VENTURE study, Viking announced that VK2735 achieved its primary and all secondary endpoints, meaning patients receiving the treatment saw clinically meaningful reductions in body weight compared with those taking a placebo.

Even better, Viking’s safety data showed that the drug was well-tolerated, with most side effects reported as mild or moderate. That’s a big deal in this market — one of the key complaints about first-generation GLP-1 drugs has been nausea and other gastrointestinal side effects.

According to the company’s press release, “VK2735 demonstrated encouraging safety and tolerability in the VENTURE study, with the majority of observed adverse events being reported as mild or moderate.”

If those results hold up in larger trials, Viking could become a serious contender in the GLP-1 space.

At around a fraction of Eli Lilly’s price, VKTX offers investors early-stage exposure to one of the most promising new entrants in obesity treatment.

    AI stock's smoking gun

Something bizarre is now happening in AI's biggest companies...

And it's imperative you understand it before you put another dollar into the market.

What was once AI's Money Machine is now being called a smoking gun and even a self-eating snake.

    Here's an example...

Oracle pledged tens of billions to Nvidia for chips.
Nvidia plans to invest $100 billion in OpenAI.
And OpenAI signed a $300 billion cloud deal with Oracle.
So, are these profits a mirage? And could this be the end of the AI trade?

One Wall Street legend stepped forward to explain what's unfolding.

    Company: Structure Therapeutics (SYM: GPCR)

Another company flying under the radar is Structure Therapeutics, a biotech firm working on oral obesity and metabolic treatments.

Its lead program, aleniglipron, is a once-daily oral GLP-1 receptor agonist that aims to deliver the same benefits as injectable drugs — but in pill form. That’s an important distinction: while injections have proven effective, many patients prefer oral options for convenience and comfort.

According to CEO Raymond Stevens, Ph.D., Structure’s ACCESS and ACCESS II studies for aleniglipron remain on track for topline data readouts by the end of the year.

The company also plans to initiate a Phase 1 study of ACCG-2671 by late 2025, which it believes represents the most advanced oral small-molecule amylin agonist currently in development.

If successful, these programs could position Structure as a leader in the next generation of oral obesity drugs — potentially unlocking a multi-billion-dollar market opportunity.

Given how quickly the obesity treatment landscape is evolving, GPCR is one stock that could deliver explosive growth if its upcoming trial data show positive results.

ETF: Roundhill GLP-1 & Weight Loss ETF (SYM: OZEM)

For investors who want broad exposure to the entire obesity drug boom — without betting on a single company — there’s the Roundhill GLP-1 & Weight Loss ETF (SYM: OZEM).

Launched earlier this year, OZEM is the world’s first ETF focused exclusively on the GLP-1 and weight-loss treatment market.

With an expense ratio of 0.59%, the fund holds 23 stocks involved in the development, manufacturing, or marketing of obesity and metabolic drugs. Its top holdings include Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly, Viking Therapeutics, Roche Holding, Zealand Pharma, and Pfizer — giving investors instant diversification across the biggest players in the space.

Given the enormous interest surrounding GLP-1 treatments and obesity drugs, OZEM offers a convenient, one-click way to capture the sector’s potential upside — without having to choose individual winners.

As more clinical data emerge and new treatments hit the market, this ETF could become a go-to vehicle for investors looking to participate in what may be the biggest medical innovation story of the decade.
