Tax time is almost here again.
Everyone’s “most favorite” time of the year we get to hand over even more of our hard-earned earnings to the government.
It’s at this time of the year when demand for professional tax services and tax software surges. Many taxpayers would rather pay for peace of mind than risk making a costly mistake on their own. Filing errors — whether related to dependents, capital gains, or income reporting — can result in penalties, surprise tax bills, or unwanted attention from the IRS.
As a result, companies that simplify the tax process often see predictable seasonal strength. For investors, that recurring pattern can translate into opportunity.
Tax Preparation is Essential
Tax preparation is one of the most reliable seasonal industries in the market.
Every year, individuals and small businesses must file, regardless of economic conditions. Whether the market is strong or volatile, tax deadlines remain fixed — and demand for tax services rises accordingly.
This creates a recurring tailwind for companies positioned to serve taxpayers. Investors who understand this seasonal behavior can look for potential appreciation in tax-focused stocks between January and the April–May tax window.
In addition to price appreciation, some tax preparation companies also offer income through dividends, adding another layer of appeal for longer-term investors.
H&R Block (SYM: HRB): A Classic Tax Season Play
H&R Block is one of the most recognizable names in tax preparation.
From an investment standpoint, HRB has demonstrated a clear seasonal pattern.
Looking back at recent years shows why HRB attracts investor attention during tax season:
- 2024: HRB bottomed near $44 in January, then rallied to a post-tax high of $53.55
- 2025: The stock climbed from roughly $50 to a May high of $63.05
These moves occurred during the heart of tax season, reinforcing HRB’s tendency to strengthen as filing deadlines approach.
Intuit (SYM: INTU): The Software Powerhouse Behind TurboTax
TurboTax is one of the most widely used tax software platforms in the U.S., particularly among DIY filers, freelancers, and small business owners. Intuit’s ecosystem also includes QuickBooks and other financial tools, giving the company deep exposure to consumer and small-business finances.
From an investor’s perspective, Intuit is a higher-priced stock, but one with a strong history of tax-season momentum.
Intuit’s stock has consistently shown upside around tax time:
- 2024: INTU traded near $597 before the deadline and climbed to $670 shortly afterward
- 2025: The stock rallied from approximately $530 to a $657 high by May
These moves reflect increased software usage, subscription renewals, and heightened consumer engagement during tax season.
