One of the Best Ways to Protect a Portfolio Right Now

When markets get jumpy, income starts to matter more.

Not because yield magically stops stocks from falling.

Because cash flow makes volatility easier to sit through.

That is the real appeal of funds like DIVO, JEPQ, JEPI, and HDV. They are not built the same way, and that matters. Some lean on covered calls to turn volatility into monthly income. One leans on high-quality dividend stocks without the options overlay. If the goal is to make a portfolio feel sturdier while still staying invested, these are the kinds of tools worth watching.

    The Quality-and-Income Blend

ETF: Amplify CWP Enhanced Dividend Income ETF (SYM: DIVO)

Large-cap dividend growers paired with tactical covered calls for monthly income.

DIVO is the cleaner “quality first” option-income ETF.

Amplify says the fund is built around high-quality large-cap companies with historical dividend and earnings growth, along with a tactical covered call strategy on individual stocks. The fact sheet lists a 0.56% total expense ratio, 24 equity holdings, and a goal of generating roughly 2% to 3% of gross annual income from dividends plus 2% to 4% from option premiums. Amplify also says distributions are paid monthly.

That is why DIVO stands out.

It is not trying to squeeze every last dollar of yield out of the market. It is trying to own strong large-cap businesses and add a measured options overlay on top. That makes it a more balanced version of the income trade than some of the higher-yield products. The latest distribution history showed $0.18264 paid in January and $0.18632 in February, though Amplify also notes a meaningful portion of the February distribution was estimated to be return of capital.

    The Higher-Yield Monthly Income Pair

ETF: JPMorgan Nasdaq Equity Premium Income ETF (SYM: JEPQ)

Nasdaq-focused option-income ETF built around large-cap growth stocks and monthly cash flow.

JEPQ is the higher-octane version of this trade.

J.P. Morgan says the fund seeks current income while maintaining prospects for capital appreciation by combining option selling with U.S. large-cap growth stocks. The February 28 fact sheet lists $34.60 billion in assets, a 0.35% expense ratio, a 30-day SEC yield of 11.38%, and 108 holdings. Top positions included Nvidia, Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, Tesla, Walmart, Micron, and Broadcom. The fund traded around $55.33 on March 26.

ETF: JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF (SYM: JEPI)

Lower-volatility option-income ETF built around large-cap U.S. stocks and monthly income.

    JEPI is the steadier sibling.

J.P. Morgan says JEPI combines option premiums with a diversified, low-volatility equity portfolio and seeks to deliver a significant portion of the S&P 500’s returns with less volatility, plus monthly income. The February 28 fact sheet shows $44.96 billion in assets, a 0.35% expense ratio, a 30-day SEC yield of 7.56%, and 124 holdings. Top holdings included Johnson & Johnson, Howmet Aerospace, Analog Devices, Ross Stores, AbbVie, NextEra Energy, RTX, Trane, PepsiCo, and Yum Brands. The fund traded around $56.34 on March 26.

That is the real split between them.

JEPQ gives investors more tech and growth exposure, which can make the income stream look more attractive when Nasdaq leadership is working. JEPI is the better fit for investors who want option income with a more defensive mix underneath. Both can help cushion a portfolio, but neither is a free lunch. Covered-call income often means giving up some upside when markets rip higher.

    The Simpler Dividend Route

ETF: iShares Core High Dividend ETF (SYM: HDV)

Lower-cost, no-options dividend ETF focused on financially healthier high-yield U.S. stocks.

HDV is the simple version of the trade.

BlackRock’s fact sheet shows 74 holdings, a 0.08% expense ratio, a 30-day SEC yield of 3.36%, and quarterly distributions. Top holdings included Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Johnson & Johnson, AbbVie, Procter & Gamble, Philip Morris, Home Depot, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Altria. The fund traded around $134.77 on March 26.

That makes HDV useful for a different reason.

There is no covered-call overlay here. No option-income complexity. Just a low-cost basket of higher-yield U.S. stocks screened for financial health. That means the yield is lower than JEPQ and JEPI, but the structure is cleaner. For investors who want portfolio defense through dividends rather than through options premiums, HDV is the easier fund to understand and hold.

    Bottom line:

    DIVO is the quality-and-income blend.

    JEPQ is the higher-yield growth-heavy option-income play.

JEPI is the steadier option-income fund.

HDV is the simpler low-cost dividend route.

    Different tools. Same job.

Make volatility easier to live with while still staying invested.
