The Iran War Is Exposing a Rare-Earth Weak Spot — and That Is Creating Opportunity

Wars do not just burn through missiles.

    They burn through supply chains.

That is the part the market is finally starting to notice.

A recent South China Morning Post report said the U.S. may have only about two months of some rare-earth supplies available for military use, a reminder that modern weapons systems still depend on materials the West does not fully control. The Pentagon has already been talking more openly about the need to reduce dependence on China-linked rare-earth supply.

That is why this is bigger than a commodity story.

Rare earths sit inside magnets, semiconductors, defense systems, and industrial technologies that are hard to replace and slow to localize. The opportunity is not just buying the metal. It is owning the companies and funds tied to a domestic or allied supply-chain rebuild.

    The Pureer U.S. Buildout Story

Company: USA Rare Earth (SYM: USAR)
Mine-to-magnet rare-earth story tied directly to U.S. industrial policy and allied supply-chain buildout.

If the market wants a direct U.S. rare-earth buildout story, USAR is the obvious name.

On January 26, 2026, the Commerce Department’s CHIPS Program announced a non-binding letter of intent to provide USA Rare Earth with up to $277 million in direct funding and up to $1.3 billion in a senior secured loan. The government said the proposed support would help build a domestic, vertically integrated “mine-to-magnet” strategy, including mining in Texas and magnet manufacturing in Oklahoma. The same announcement said the projects would support estimated capital investments totaling $3.3 billion.

    That is not small.

That is Washington telling the market this supply chain matters.

USAR also moved to strengthen its European link. In January, the company said it plans to build a 3,750 mtpa metal and alloy facility in Lacq, France, co-located with Carester’s 1,600 mtpa oxide processing facility, which is scheduled for commissioning in late 2026. USA Rare Earth said the French government approved support of up to 45% of eligible equipment costs and up to €130 million for real estate.

That is why the stock has been so explosive.

This is not just a mining story. It is a strategic infrastructure story tied to defense, semiconductors, magnets, and allied industrial policy. USAR traded around $16.46 on March 24. Benchmark previously reiterated a Buy rating with a $15 price target, which already looks stale against the current quote, but the more important takeaway is that Wall Street is treating the company as a real beneficiary of a non-China rare-earth chain getting built out.

    The risk is obvious.

A lot of the government support is still proposed, not final. Big industrial projects can slip, cost more than expected, or disappoint on timing. But if the market is looking for the stock most directly linked to the rare-earth bottleneck suddenly moving from theory to urgency, USAR is hard to ignore.

    The Established U.S. Champion

    Company: MP Materials (SYM: MP)
The most established U.S. rare-earth player, now backed by a transformational Defense Department partnership.

If USAR is the buildout dream, MP is the operating foundation.

In July 2025, MP Materials announced what it called a transformational public-private partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense to accelerate an end-to-end domestic rare-earth magnet supply chain. MP said the package includes a 10-year NdPr price floor, a 10-year magnet offtake commitment, a $400 million preferred-equity investment from DoD, a $150 million DoD loan tied to heavy rare-earth separation expansion, and $1.0 billion of financing commitments from JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs for its new “10X” facility.

That is the kind of backing investors should pay attention to.

MP is not just talking about rare-earth independence. It is already operating the Mountain Pass asset in California and building downstream magnet capacity in Texas. The Defense Department is not making this kind of long-dated commitment because it wants a speculative flyer. It is doing it because the U.S. needs a domestic champion that can actually produce.

That makes MP the steadier way to play the theme.

The stock traded around $51.88 on March 24. It does not have the same lottery-ticket feel as USAR, but it has something more useful for many investors: an established operating base, a clearer strategic role, and direct federal support already tied to long-term pricing and offtake.

The risk is that rare-earth pricing is still volatile and execution still matters.

Government backing helps, but it does not eliminate the need to deliver. Still, if the thesis is that the U.S. will spend aggressively to reduce foreign rare-earth dependency, MP looks like one of the cleanest ways to own that trend.

    The Diversified Basket

ETF: VanEck Rare Earth and Strategic Metals ETF (SYM: REMX)
Diversified rare-earth and strategic-metals basket for investors who want the theme without betting on one stock.

Some investors will not want to pick a winner.

That is where REMX comes in.

VanEck’s fund is designed to track the MVIS Global Rare Earth/Strategic Metals Index. Recent fund materials show a 0.58% gross expense ratio, and third-party holdings data show the ETF currently holds roughly 30 to 32 names tied to producing, refining, and recycling rare earths and strategic metals. Those holdings include MP Materials, Lynas Rare Earths, Albemarle, and other global players tied to the same supply-chain theme.

That makes it the cleaner portfolio tool.

REMX traded around $84.28 on March 24. It gives investors exposure to the rare-earth and strategic-metals theme without forcing them to guess whether USAR or MP wins more of the next leg. It is the right vehicle for investors who believe the rare-earth bottleneck is real, but do not want all the single-name execution risk that comes with early-stage industrial stories.

    The trade-off is upside.

A basket will not move like the hottest single stock in the group. But it also will not get punished as badly if one project slips, one funding package gets delayed, or one company stumbles operationally. In a theme this geopolitical and this policy-driven, diversification is not a bad thing.

    Bottom line:

USAR is the higher-volatility mine-to-magnet growth story.
MP is the more established U.S. rare-earth champion with federal backing already in place.
REMX is the diversified way to own the same theme without making a one-stock bet.

    That is the opportunity.

The market keeps talking about oil.

But one of the more important bottlenecks exposed by this war may be the materials needed to build the systems behind modern defense and advanced manufacturing.
