If you’re looking for opportunities, pay close attention to stocks with high short interest.
Not only can high short interest identify potential high risks, it can also be a sign of a possible short squeeze situation – especially if the stock in question has been rocketing higher.
Look at Viking Therapeutics (SYM: VKTX), for example.
With 23% of its float short, Viking Therapeutics has been gaining momentum.
In fact, since bottoming out at around $25, it’s now up to $38.88 and climbing. Fueling upside, analysts at Canaccord initiated coverage of the obesity treatment stock with a buy rating and a price target of $106 a share. VKTX is just starting to race higher again on obesity news.
In addition, the company is seeing progress in its Phase 3 VANQUISH trial for the injectable obesity drug VK2735. As noted in a company press release, “The company expects to complete enrollment in the VANQUISH-1 study by the end of 2025, with completion of enrollment in VANQUISH-2 expected in 1Q26.”
Altimmune (SYM: ALT)
Another hot, potential short squeeze candidate is Altimmune.
With a short interest of 24.5%, Altimmune continues to gain momentum on the obesity treatment story, and the potential for further industry M&A.
As it noted in its most recent earnings report, “Pemvidutide demonstrated rapid and robust MASH effects, meaningful weight loss and impressive safety and tolerability in the recently reported results from the IMPACT Phase 2b trial,” said Vipin K. Garg, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Altimmune. “We are preparing for an End-of-Phase 2 Meeting with the FDA which will position us well for Phase 3 development.”
Kohl’s (NYSE: KSS)
With 31% of its float short, KSS has been explosive. In fact, since bottoming out at around $10.25 in August, the retailer’s stock is now up to $16.43. Fueling upside, Citi has a 90-day positive catalyst watch on Kohl’s with a price target of $19 a share.
The firm provided the 90-day watch as “improved comparable store sales comparisons in the second half of this year and an acceleration in web traffic suggest the consensus expectations for the department store are ‘overly conservative,’” as noted by Seeking Alpha.
