This is Why Investors Should Hedge for Volatility
Markets have been on an absolute tear lately.
Stocks have surged to fresh highs after July inflation data came in cooler than expected, stoking hopes that the Federal Reserve might deliver a much more aggressive rate cut than previously thought. The market’s new favorite scenario? A 50-basis-point cut as soon as September.
“After yesterday’s ‘not as bad as it could have been’ July Consumer Price Index report, the equity markets are now in full ‘easing expectation’ mode,” explained CFRA Research’s chief investment strategist Sam Stovall, as quoted by CNBC. He noted that even if Thursday’s Producer Price Index shows monthly and yearly increases, investors are likely to shrug it off in favor of the bigger picture — looser monetary policy.
Adding fuel to the fire, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Bloomberg he believes the Fed is on the brink of starting a series of cuts. “I think we could go into a series of rate cuts here, starting with a 50-basis point rate cut in September,” Bessent said. “If you look at any model, it suggests that we should probably be 150, 175 basis points lower.”
In other words, the market now believes the Fed will pivot faster — and more aggressively — than many expected just weeks ago. And traders are piling in.
The Calm Before the StormBut here’s the thing about markets: periods of extreme optimism can also set the stage for sudden reversals. Alongside the surge in stocks, the CBOE Volatility Index (SYM: VIX) — often referred to as the market’s “fear gauge” — has fallen to its lowest level since December 2024. On the surface, that’s a sign of calm and confidence. But history tells us that the VIX rarely stays this low for long. UBS recently issued a warning on exactly this point: “While the VIX index of implied stock volatility has fallen to the lowest level since December last year, market swings could pick up quickly if trade tensions escalate significantly, economic data weakens faster than expected, or if geopolitical risks worsen,” the firm noted. It’s a familiar pattern — complacency can quickly turn into panic when an unexpected headline hits. And when volatility spikes, it tends to do so suddenly, giving investors little time to react. |

Why Hedge Now?When the VIX is low, protection is cheap. And that’s exactly why experienced investors often put hedges in place before the market gets choppy. Think of it as buying insurance — you hope you don’t need it, but you’re glad to have it if trouble comes. Historically, low VIX levels have preceded major spikes during events like the 2018 “Volmageddon,” the 2020 pandemic crash, and countless geopolitical flare-ups. In each case, investors who had exposure to volatility products saw outsized returns in a matter of days or weeks. Given how much is riding on the Fed’s next move, and how quickly sentiment can shift, the current low-volatility environment is an opportunity to position defensively. 3 ETFs for Hedging VolatilityHere are three exchange-traded products that provide exposure to volatility and can serve as a hedge if markets get rocky:
While these ETFs aren’t designed for long-term holding (due to decay from futures roll costs), they can be effective tools for tactical hedging. |

GENIUS Act Threatens Your Financial Future
The new federal law called the GENIUS Act will essentially cancel your money.
You see, the government and its allies have found a new way to roll out programmable, trackable digital currency—without calling it a CBDC.
Now, private corporations like Circle, BlackRock, and Tether are being handed the keys to issue stablecoins…
Digital dollars backed by the U.S. government, but controlled by unelected tech and finance elites.
This gives them full control to:
Legally spy on how you spend every penny…
-Freeze your transactions or block your purchases…
-Enforce rules on when, where, or how you can use your money…
-You may think, I'll just never touch a stablecoin.
But here's the problem...You won't have a choice.
Once these coins are embedded into major apps, banks, payroll systems…
Even retail stores, you'll be pushed into using them by default.
And once this system goes live across the board?
Every American and every business will be trapped inside a financial system they don't control, and can't escape.
Here's the secret for protecting your money from Big Tech having full control of...
When...
How...
And even where you spend your money.
Bonus: Cannabis Stocks on the MoveVolatility isn’t just about protecting against downside — it can also create big upside opportunities. Case in point: cannabis stocks just had a massive day after former President Donald Trump hinted at a potential reclassification of marijuana under federal law. “We’re looking at reclassification,” Trump told CNBC, adding that a decision could come “over the next few weeks.” If cannabis is moved from Schedule 1 (highest restriction) to Schedule 3, it would open the door to expanded medical research and reduce tax burdens for cannabis companies. That possibility sent the sector into a frenzy:
The rally could just be starting. If reclassification happens, it could unleash a wave of capital into the space. Investors looking for broader exposure might consider the AdvisorShares Pure US Cannabis ETF (SYM: MSOS). With an expense ratio of 0.6%, MSOS focuses exclusively on U.S. cannabis companies, including multi-state operators like Green Thumb Industries, Trulieve, Curaleaf, and Jushi Holdings. |
